Another thought...what you may be seeing is the "Google Sidebar." Try opening up all the programs (bottom left corner) and click on the Google icon. Google Desktop may be in that menu, and you can right click it to move it to your desktop. (For some reason, I sometimes have to do that to get the sidebars, with weather, moon and news apps, to show up.)
