There is a remarkable story in the popular press about a German woman getting her Ph.D. in neonatology after passing her oral defense. The remarkable part is that she is 102 years old and had to wait almost 80 years to get to do her oral defense. It's a story about racist German Nazis and rabid U.S. anti-communists and, ultimately, resolution.
