The lifetime service does seem to be an occasional promotion, and sometimes 
it's limited to current subscribers only.  Best bet is to ask Tivo if they 
have any options, or buy from someone like www.weaknees.com and I think they 
have some units with lifetime already on them, but I could be wrong on that.
