With the proper part, this is no more involved than some screws and two cables, right? If so, most people should be able to do this themselves without the inconvenience or cost of sending a unit in. (Though I'm not bagging anyone for offering the service.)
There are plenty of YouTube videos for replacing DVD and CD-ROM drives.
