Dear Friends,
2 months ago, we had a farewell party for one of our friends named Gregor Sieboeck. We were talking about all kind of stuff, and one of the guess ask us, 'if someone ask you what have you done to raise the awareness of people around you about the importance of the environment, what will you answer?' Actually we didnt answer that simple question. He said,' i will said that I know Gregor Sieboeck'. We laughed, its a little bit silly, but if you think about it, maybe he has a point. Maybe you all wondering ' who the hell is Gregor Sieboeck'. He is small Austrian guy, born in 1976. So, he is quite young, only 27. Next question is, what is the amazing thing about him?? Well, he is my senior in LUMES program. My first impression of him was ... a very silly guy who likes to wear bright color shirt and hat and has a very contagious laughter.
By accident, I knew that he's preparing his campaign called Blue Planet Footprint Campaign (http://www.globalchange.at/uk/main/uk.htm). Basically, he is going to hike from Austria to Japan... and of course 'by foot'. Its going to take 3 YEARS. Can you imagine walking (mostly) for 3 years??? He started his hiking in July 2003 and will end in Tokyo, Japan in 2006. Im not quite sure his personal reasons to do this 'hiking thingy', but as you can read in the website he tries to show the consumption differences between 'developed' and 'undeveloped' countries or in another term 'the ecological footprint' ....i hate to use developed and undeveloped term ....:(. Along his hiking he's going to do some campaign about this matter and encourage people to reduce their consumption (Im not sure how he's going to do this, maybe by setting up several meetings with NGOs and authority in the countries that he will visit). In the beginning I thought he was crazy to do this journey, but now.... all LUMES are very proud of him.
Hej, who knows maybe in 3 years we can see Gregor's Journey in TV since one of the Austrian TV channels is going to make a story about it and (maybe) they will air it in 2006.
From time to time, Gregor emails us with a very short email about his journey... When I read them, I (kind of) envy him. He's so young, but look at what he's doing ..... and look what im doing. I can surely say that I cant compare myself to him.... but (there is always 'but' ), I know that my contribution to the ecosystem or environment maybe just like a drop of water in the ocean.... but there will be no ocean if there are no thousand of millions of water 'dropsssssss' right? ... All I can do (at the moment) are separate my garbage and (always) try to buy 'ecological' food.....just as simple as that. I like to think that no matter how small my contribution now, but it will make a difference in 10 years.
I think the reason why I write this email is because I believe if you have something 'great' you should share it with the world..... and Gregor is just one of the examples. For me, his journey is a very great thing and need lots of courage to do it and I admire him for that. and i want all of you to know him a little bit, and maybe he can inspire all of us to do something .... ......so please check the website (http://www.globalchange.at/uk/main/uk.htm ) from time to time, some parts are still under construction but Gregor's team are still working on it. If you want, you can write to Gregor at [EMAIL PROTECTED] just to give him some support and Im sure he will appreciate it.
