Are you logging the startup of the daemon? You should look into doing that - it may tell you where you have gone wrong. Also consider the -d option for tmda-ofmipd. And if the tmda-ofmipd is on the same server as the vpopmail installation you are checking against (as it appears it is), consider using a the --authprog option.

Here is my /etc/init.d/ofmipd startup file:

su -l vpopmail -c '/home/vpopmail/tmda-1.0.2/bin/tmda-ofmipd -S /home/vpopmail/tmda-1.0.2/contrib/vpopmail-vdir.sh -p 0.0.0.0:8025 -R pop3://127.0.0.1'
