I am sure you could do the same thing using '@' variables which we
introduced in the latest version of tmux:
tmux set @raw_mode true
tmux show @raw_mode
Or whatever you'd want to do with it.

This is what #{client_prefix} is useful for. Then you can colour whatever
you like.
