Ken, Did you make sure to use gnutar and not tar? I believe the Jakarta tar files use gnu extensions, and gnutar must be used. At least that's what I read and it got me out of a jam with a mangled pathname within Tomcat when unpacked with tar - or StuffIt, for that matter.
