In source based distros (I'm still using sourcemage @ home) no problem,
the choice is yours. In binary based distros, you either have to accept
someone's choice (compiled in features and dependencies) or compile your
version.

I believe that redhat-like distros are compiling everything in. But I
might be wrong.

Personally I don't care, text mode is good enough for me. Generally the
more packages we have the more work we have with patching. Can we
install solaris without gtk ? If not, I don't see point of having two
different packages.
