OK--

I guess I misunderstood what the first pop-up was telling me--I assumed
that it could show a small list because the URI that I am changing was
only referenced in those places, which I then assumed would mean that none
of the other files would get affected, and therefore would not be opened.
Is there something I am not considering? Will a file change due to
changing a URI, if that URI is not referenced there?

The "Close Others" option works great, if you only had one tab opened to
start with; if this action causes my 5 tabs to expand to 25, then it's a
bit of a pain to get back to just the 5.

Jim; What does your import structure look like? If some of the files
you unselected are between those you do, then they could also be
changed.

E.g. suppose you have a 'main' that imports imp1 and imp1 imports
imp2. You change something in imp2. In the pop-up box you leave main
chosen and unselect imp1. Even though you've stated that imp1 should
not be changed, imp1 could still be changed because it is imported by
main, which you are changing. Hence imp1's will get opened.

You can choose "Close all" for the file tabs.
