I agree that the three-pane view is preferable, but also agree with Janbar 
about long filenames. Instead of having the three panes as:

A
BC

How about:

A
B
C

So B (files) can show full paths, and C (changes) will be wide enough to show a 
full line. Ironically A (commit message) probably has the lowest space 
requirement!
