Hmm, but the log shows exactly what happens if someone changes the last
lines of /etc/pulse/default.pa from the below (this is the original):

### Make some devices default
#set-default-sink output
#set-default-source input

to this:

### Make some devices default
#set-default-sink output
set-default-source 2

...notice how they should be commented out by default.

Or if it loads a copy of default.pa in ~/.config/pulse or ~/.pulse where
this change has been done?

  Not sure if it was an update or what that broke, but I suddenly have
  no ability to control sound.

  Sound settings no longer show any output devices and syslog is flooded
  with pulseaudio messages.
