@Sebastien: Hmm.. That upstream issue talks about Ctrl+. which is a shortcut I was unaware of. It's apparently something else but Ctrl+Shift+e, where IBus is involved somehow, and which just as Ctrl+Shift+u conflicts with shortcuts in certain applications as the OP pointed out in the bug description.
