It depends on how the drive behaves, if it spins down the platter but
keeps the USB connection alive then it should be fine. 

There seem to be some drives that disable the logical connection when
they go into sleep mode and that will cause the server to stop, which
then means it will do a scan when it comes back up. 

Some people have been able to find settings for those drives that
prevent it from dropping the logical connection.
