I know how frustrating this is...
Anyway, I run my SB-Server on a Sheevaplug which uses only up to 5
Watts or so, and, still, I actually don't leave it running 24/7. I have
everything connected to a AC socket with a switch. Everytime I listen to
music I switch everything on. It takes about 1:20 mins until the server
is ready and I can listen to music. But it took exactly the same time
when I was still using the USB HDD on the Touch with tinySBS. However,
the whole thing works much better. Yes, the Sheevaplug is not very
powerful either, but by using it I more than double the system
resources and I can run a fully-fledged SBS 7.5.1.
When I finish listening to music I press the stop button and simply
switch off my AC plug. My USB HDD (connected to the Sheevaplug) is
formatted in EXT3 and doesn't mind simply being disconnected from power
even when reading (and that's the only thing the SBS does anyway because
the database is stored on the Sheevaplug).
Maybe a similar setup would work for you.

Cheers
