No. The linux box talks to nothing but the next switch.
There your precious bits will be buffered, sent through an internal
bus, re-packaged and sent to the next device in the link.

How about trying to use 10Base2 coax? That will give you an even lower
bandwidth, will be half-duplex, too, you can terminate it with a nice
resistor, it's shielded, has those worthy BNC connectors and you can be
sure to always talk directly to your Squeezebox since it's a bus, no
switches in between.
Fortunately, I've still got a few meters lying around, how's that?

O, wait, too bad, the Touch doesn't have a coax network connector. That
would make for a nice mod, wouldn't it?
