Once you connect two network devices you have created a "network", wired or wireless. Your wife's laptop wired to Touch was a two item "network".
What you are proposing is another two piece wired network of VBA to Touch. What people are suggesting is to add a router to simplify your network configuration (this is a primary point of routers).
