The Touch can output 24/88 just fine, but some DACs cannot receive it. It seems strange but some designers just left out 24/88.2. My guess is they had a DAC that could do 44.1 or 48 and the marketing department said they had to do 96, so the engineers added 96, but since nobody said they needed 88.2, they never bothered to make it do that.
