I think LMS handles special characters pretty well. I have several Norwegian albums with Æ, Ø and Å, and although it doesn't sort them in the right order, they're displayed correctly, and searching for them works fine.
Earlier today, I made a search for "total". Among the other search results, LMS returned the Russian album Тоталитаризм.
