If the dac is a usb audio class 2 device and connects to the Touch at
"high" speed then you don't need a hub.  If however it is a usb audio
class 1 async dac and connects at "full" speed then you need a hub. 
This is due to what appears to be a limitation of the hardware in the
Touch for the case of usb1 connected devices.

Easy way to know is to connect the dac and select it, then return to the
digital output page and select the dac again, this displays an info page
about the dac and at the top line it will says whether it is high or
full speed.  The app should read this internally and only ask you about
the no hub option and display a warning about needing a hub if it sees
"full" speed.
