My experince was when Touch was brand new that they tweaked the firmware
to cope with 24/96 over wifi, originally it did not do that very well it
buffered did not matter much if it where flac or pcm (tested both ) .

Btw you can still uppsample (if your dac somehow works better in this
fashion, feed such a signal ) and send it as flac to the player , but
that may be another extra step if you up sample everything and sending
PCM is the least complicated option.

In my setup sending in the original resolution works best my processor
upsamples anyway before doing it's thing (room eq trifield sub xover )
and the dacs in my speakers upsample some more (as most dac's do ) .
And i can keep the original settings, makes transcoding of whatever
including radio and spotify behave like expected wo delving in to custom
convert.conf etc .

Btw please just dont buy that mythology spread by for example TaS that
flac somehow sounds "inferior" the net have enough of that already .
