We also have at least one internal plugin making use of streamfilters. In general, it's a nice thing to have, as plugins can tweak the ui with zero help from the main Trac devs. It's like having hooks everywhere, even in places no one thought about previously. In a hook-based model, when there's no hook where you need one, you first have to convince others that it might be useful, and then wait for the next Trac release.
