We already have this with the current solution. Right now people are already saying they get too many crashes and they are disabling indexing or removing Tracker because we are over protective.

If we are really sucking up all memory and making the machine unusable we really need to fix it, not put a measure in place expecting it.


not really - ubuntu put an exception so that crashes in tracker-extract
are no longer reported a while back

its designed to crash to protect the system from undesirable resource
usage. Its generally not possible to fix it as the extractors will
always be open to third parties to produce their own thus its prudent to
have a safety net in place

Of course - that's why it is designed this way ;)

But you don't catch these serious memory issues by just crashing with another error which hides the real problem. Consider memory profiling, how would you do that?
