The only other language with a larger number of users might be Chinese. Although this would depend on how you tally the numbers. There are different dialects.
The project was originally started in Spain at a Spanish university. Rubén
continued the project outside of university. At some point Richard Stallman
asked Rubén to move it to English. I'm unsure what the exact reason was
although I believe it had something to do with numbers and English being the
most common language. That was certainly not a bad move. From a quick glance
there appear to be as many English speaking users today as Spanish. However
the world-wide population favors English. If there are 500 million Spanish
speakers (1st and 2nd languages) in the world there are almost that many
native speakers for English. Then combine those that speak a 2nd language and
you end up with possibly as many as 1 billion.
