Yea- I'm not entirely sure this is as bad as some are suggesting, but it's not entirely clear to me why they are removing the preference. I'd think it were to prevent malicious applications- which might even include those from say Oracle from modifying the preference so that it can continue to install a search bar. I'm not sure this will be effective though as it may just push such parties to replace the entire binary with a modified version that returns the preference- thus enabling it to continue installing the plug-in. This might work to prevent Oracle from installing a plug-in, but it won't stop a more disconnected entity from doing so (Ie which probably means a smaller entity or an entity with few to no assets in the United States).
