Hello All.
I am a middle aged Noob. I installed Trisqul Mini on 2 older laptops I had
that previously had Windows XP on. The first is a DELL E1705, and the 2nd is
an ASUS EEPC 1005HAB.
I have played around in the past with DesktopBSD, and FreeBSD, however I had
trouble installing either of those onto my laptops. So through some research
I discovered Trisquel LIve and I was quite pleased with how well my laptops
responded to it. So I made the plunge and installed Trisuel Mini on both
systems. I decided to go with the MINI since these are older systems and I
didnt want to tax my hardware to much. FOr the most part I am pleased with
the Mini's performance. I have learned a little here and there when I have
time, but I mostly use each system for web browsing. I have also installed
Google Chrome so I can watch Netflix while I am away from home.
TO date I have a few issue that I have been trying to resolve and am having
no luck. The first is that if I am watching a video from youtube my screen
will black out. I have found instructions online about how to go about
changing a conf file (etc/kbd/config) to Blank Time = 0, but everytime I try
it will not allow me to save the file. I have read that it is because I am
not logged in as ROOT, however there is no option for me to log in as ROOT.
I have a similar issue while using PHOTOREC. I used this program to recover
lost pictures from my previous XP system and it worked quite well. However if
I try to delete unwanted pictures the system will not allow me to delete
anything...unless I am the ROOT user.
Finally, while browsing I noticed the system slows down and at times becomes
unresponsive. I thought maybe it was because the Software Updater was looking
for the latest updates. So I looked at the settings and saw that it was set
to check for updates daily. If I try to change the settings, they do not hold
at all. I am unable to change them at all...just look at them.
I feel very restricted in making any kind of changes to my system since
installing Trisqul. I am sure these are all NOOB issues that I still need to
learn, however I have yet to learn it. And really...I just want my
screensaver to stay off while watching netflix, or for my laptop to not hang
while browsing. I am not looking to do much other than that.
