OP: Sell your laptop and for the money you get out of it buy a laptop with an  
integrated intel GPU older than skylake.
All ati cards require proprietary firmware for video acceleration meaning  
that in Trisquel your laptop will run at 20% of its potential performance,  
give or take. Your laptop gets hot and shuts down because the CPU is doing  
all the work and it gets stressed out even for a simple task as watching a  
720p video. There are no other (libre) solutions OP, trust me, I've been  
there.
