The following message is relayed to you by trom@lists.newciv.org

The purpose of this post is to help Trommers better understand the
postulate failure chart and make it easier to do.

I begin with a few relevant excerpts from the TROM manual.

To those doing the "Postulate failure chart" or those who have done it,
please go over this expanded version I wrote up and correct me where I am
wrong if I am wrong. Please email me the corrections.

*************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

*Before I go on please take note (this is still a work in progress): *

There are at least a couple of things I do not understand on this chart
and consequently fall short:

*Quote: 1. Thus, legs 1 and 3 are winning valences, and legs 2 and 4 are
losing valences. *

Can someone please explain what the winning valences are and what the
losing valences are, on the chart?

When I try and follow the sequences, on the chart, they do not make sense.

*Quote: 2. Shifts from legs 1 to 2, or 3 to 4, are not valence shifts,
they are merely the super-imposition of a Mustn’t postulate over an
existing Must postulate, now in failure. *

I do not see the super impositions happening on the PFC.

I do see *"self"* go from leg 1- line 2B* "Must not know"*.... to leg 2-
line 3A *"Must not know".*

And *"other"* go from *"Must not be known"* to *"Must not be known".*

In both situations the valences remain the same.

So my question is: What is meant by super impositions?

Going from 6B to 7A is similar. I do not see a super imposition?

There are no super impositions here that I see. The valences remain the
same.

Can someone please explain what and where the super impositions are?

*Understanding and doing the postulate failure chart:*

First you have to get to know the different types of personalities:

Quote on personalities from TROM book

 People do tend - repeat
*tend* - to become more or less fixed in one or other of the
legs of the basic game, and take on the personality characteristics
of the postulate they are dramatizing. Viz:

*Def. Viz : "namely", "that is to say", and "as follows".*

Evaluate yourself, the people you know in person, in your life and in
public, including the media and categorize them according to the TROM
descriptions:

*1. Must be known**.* *Personality type: *Outflowing. Extrovert.
Persuasive. Creative. Often prone to jealousy.

*Overts by infliction*, and *very upset by rejection*. He got into this leg
by being overwhelmed by a *"Must Be Known"*, whose valence he now occupies.

*2. Mustn**'**t be known*. *Personality type: *Restrained outflow.
Retiring. Devious. Secretive. Obsessed by privacy. Tends to collect mass
and wealth by the simple expedient of not being able to outflow it.

Overts by deprivation, and very worried by the thought of their secret
wheeler-dealings being revealed.

He got into this leg by being overwhelmed by a "*Mustn**'**t know*" while
being in the *"Must be known"* leg;
he now dramatizes the "*Mustn**'**t be known" PD postulate* of his
overwhelmer.

*3. Must know.* *Personality type: *Inflow. Nosey. Curious. Inclined to he
highly sensual. Demands open comm lines. Hates secrets, and loves exposing
them. Good solver of puzzles.

*Overts by revelation*, and just *hates being deprived of things*. He got
into this leg by being *overwhelmed by a "Must know*", whose valence he now
occupies.

*4. Mustn**'**t know**.* *Personality type: *Restrained inflow. Rejection.
Compulsively makes nothing out of things. *Destructive. Overts by
rejection,* and dreads having anything inflicted upon him.

Contrary to popular opinion he did not get this way by having things forced
upon him. He got into this leg *by being overwhelmed by a "Mustn**'**t be
known" *while being in the* "Must know" *leg*; *he now dramatizes the
*"Mustn**'**t know" PD postulate* of his overwhelmer.

*He **ha**s been overwhelmed by deprivation.*

*1. Must be known …..................3. Must know*

*2. Must not be known...................4. Must not know. *

*It is to be noted that valence shifts are always diagonally across the
goals package. *

*The valence the being goes into is called the winning valence; the
valence he comes out of is called the losing valence. *

*Thus, legs 1 and 3 are winning valences, and legs 2 and 4 are losing
valences. *

*Shifts from legs 1 to 2, or 3 to 4, are not valence shifts, they are
merely the super-imposition of a Mustn’t postulate over an existing Must
postulate, now in failure. *

*All valence shifts involve the adoption of a new identity, whether real
or imagined. *

 *TROM L5 PFC expanded:*

Line 1A: Description of personality types on line 1A:

You: *Must know.* *Personality type: **Inflow. Nosey. Curious. Inclined to
he highly sensual. Demands open comm lines. Hates secrets, and loves
exposing them. Good solver of puzzles. *

*Overts by revelation, and just hates being deprived of things. He got into
this leg by being overwhelmed by a Must know, whose valence he now
occupies.*

Your other guy in this complementary postulate 1A situation is *“Must be
known”*:

*Must be known. Personality type: Outflowing. Extrovert. Persuasive.
Creative. Often prone to jealousy. *

*Overts by infliction, and very upset by rejection. He got into this leg by
being overwhelmed by a “Must Be Known”, whose valence he now occupies.*

Line 1A: works this way: *(Follow the PFC beginning with line 1A and
follow all the way to line 8B.) *

The other guy “outflowing- extrovert” *“Must be known”* in a complementary
situation (the one Dennis says; you put over there) to you as a “nosey” *“Must
know”*, (like maybe because you got too close to him, you wanted to know
too much and you upset him) gets upset and overwhelms you and you suffer
from *inf**l**iction*. You are now in a *“forced to know”* condition as
stated in column 7. He is in a *“forcing to know”* condition.

That is you as a *“Must know”*, are rejected and humiliated and are now in
a* “forced to know” *situation.

“*Must be Known”* has committed an overt of *infliction* on you. You a *“must
know”,* are upset and now motivated to retaliate. As a result of his
infliction you are converted from a *“Must know”* to a “*Must not Know”*.
Because you adopted his PDP of *“must not know”.* You are withdrawn.
Humiliated.

*Mustn't know. Personality type: Restrained inflow. Rejection.
Compulsively makes nothing out of things. Destructive. Overts by rejection,
and dreads having anything inflicted upon him. Contrary to popular opinion
he did not get this way by having things forced upon him. *

*He got into this leg by being overwhelmed by a Mustn't be known while
being in the Must know leg; he now dramatizes the Mustn't know PD postulate
of his overwhelmer. He's been overwhelmed by deprivation.*

*From 1A to 1B you dropped/ you shifted from a position at (3)“must know”
to a position at (4) “must not know”*

1B: The other guy (now your opponent) *“Must be known”* in another round,
now in a conflict game against you now as a *“Must not know” *hammers you*,
*overwhelms you good for being so nosey. As a result of this second round
he coverts you from a receipt condition to a originating condition or
position. Because you are now angry, you are going to fight back from your
“must not know” position.

You are first overwhelmed and then when you recover, you want to get back
at him and you adopt the origin (attack) position for the next round in
position in 2A.

*On line 2A: you are now a: Mustn't know. Personality type: Restrained
inflow. Rejection. Compulsively makes nothing out of things. Destructive.
Overts by rejection, and dreads having anything inflicted upon him. *

*Contrary to popular opinion he did not get this way by having things
forced upon him. He got into this leg by being overwhelmed by a Mustn't be
known while being in the Must know leg; he now dramatizes the Mustn't know
PD postulate of his overwhelmer. He has been overwhelmed by deprivation.*

This time round you are in the originating position.

2A: You, as a *“Must not know”* (are now humiliated and angry) in another
round, another game (now take the originating position) against *“Must **be**
know**n**”* and overwhelm him and you win and drop him from *“Must be
Known”* to a “*Must not be known”* valence.

**Mustn't be known. Restrained outflow. Retiring. Devious. Secretive.
Obsessed by privacy. Tends to collect mass and wealth by the simple
expedient of not being able to outflow it. *

*Overts by deprivation, and very worried by the thought of their secret
wheeler-dealings being revealed. *

*He got into this leg by being overwhelmed by a Mustn't know while being in
the Must be known leg;he now dramatizes the Mustn't be known PD postulate
of his overwhelmer.*

You as *“**M**ust not know”*, have now commited an overt against your
opponent. The other guy is now operating on a valence of *“Must not be
known”* has lost this game and is now motivated to retaliate. He is angry
at you because you rejected him.You (a *"Must not know"*) made him adopt
your PDP of *"Must not be known"*.

2B: You, still a *“**Must not know”* in another round, still in the
originating position, want to finish him off, and again overwhelm the other
guy *“Must not be known”* causing him, a *“Must not be known”* to suffer
from *rejection*.

You have commited an overt of rejection against him. “The other guy *“Must
not be known”* is now motivated to get back at you.

You put put him in a position of *“prevent**ed** from being known”*. That
means in a state of rejection. You are in a *“preventing from being
known” *condition.
You have fully rejected him. He is mad and motivated to retaliate.

*Leg 1 is from 1A to 2B.*

*From TROM Book: Leg 1 commits the overt of infliction and suffers the
motivator of rejection.*

 *Leg 1 is a winning valence. *

3A: The other guy *“Must not be known”, *now in a originate position, in a
conflict against you, overwhelms you as a *“**Must not know”*. And causes
the the overt of *deprivation* against you. You as a *“Must not know”* have
been *deprived*. You are suffering from *deprivation*. You are overwhelmed.
You are in a *“prevented from knowing”* condition. He is a *"preventing
from knowing"* position. He has his foot on your neck. You are mad. You are
motivated to retaliate.

3B: *“Must not be known”* is ready and waiting for you and when you get
up. You; a *“Must not know”, * are in the receipt position and in a battle
against you, you win. You knock him down from a origin position to a
receipt position.

4A: You *“Must Know”* now in the origin position, in a game, a conflcit
against *“Must not be known”* in the receipt posiiton and overwhelm him,
commit an overt, and force him to adopt your PDP (valence) of *“Must be
known”*.

4B: You a *“Must know”* in another round, another conflict against the
other guy, now a *“Must be known”, * overwhelm him and put him in a
position / condition of *“forcing to be known”*. You forced him to *reveal*.
*He is suffering from revelation.* He is now motivated to retaliate.

You are in the *"forcing to be known"* position and he is the *"forced to
be known"* position.

 *L**eg 2 is from 3A to 4B.*

*From TROM book: Leg two commits the overt of Deprivation and suffers the
motivator of Revelation.*

*Leg 2 is a losing valence. *

*Between 4B and 5 A there is a valence shift. You go from "Must know"
to "Must be known". *

5A The other guy in valence *“Must know”* (in originate position) in a
conflict against you *“Must be known” *overwhelms you, commits an overt,
and forces you to reveal. He wins, you lose. You are now in a *“forced to
be known” *condition. He is in a *“forcing to be known”*. He has his foot
on your neck. You are now motivated to retaliate.

5B: Now *“Must know” *orginates a conflict against you as a *“Must not be
known” *in the receipt position. He causes you to shift you from receipt
postion to a orginate postion for the next round.

6A: You now as *“Must not be known”* in the originate position, in a
conflict (game) against the other guy in his valence of *“Must
know**”*overwhelm
him, (committing an overt) dropping him into his lower valence of *“Must
not know”*.

6B: You as *“Must not be known”* (again in the originate position) in a
conflict with the other guy in his valence of *“Must not know”* overwhelm
him, you win, and commit an overt of *deprivation. *

You as a* “Must not be known”* put him in a condition of *“prevented from
knowing”* and you are in a condition of *“preventing from knowing”*. You
have your foot on his neck.

*From TROM book: Leg 3 commits the overt of **Revelation** and suffers the
motivator of **Deprivation**. *

 *Leg 3 is a winning valence. *

7A: The other guy as an *“Must not know”* valence, in the originate
position, in a conflict against you as *“Must not be known”* overwhelms
you. He commits an overt against you. He now puts you in a *“prevented from
being known”* condition. He is in a *“preventing from being
known”*condition. He has his foot on your neck. You are now motivated
to
retaliate.

You now adopt the valence of *“Must be known” *for the next round.

7B: The other guy in his *“Must not know”* valence (in originate position)
in a game against you as a *“Must be known”, *overwhelms you, and you
shift from a receipt position to a originate position. You retain your *"Must
be known"* valence.

8A: You as a *“Must be known”* (in the originate position) in a conflict
game against the other guy in his valence of *“Must not know”* overwhelm
him and put him into a *“Must know”* valence. You force him to adopt your
PD postulate of *“Must know”*.

8B: You as *“Must be known”* in a conflict against the other guy, now in
his new valence of *“must know”* commit an overt and overwhelm him and put
him into a condition of *“Forced to know”*. And you are in a condition
of *“Forcing
to know”. * You win and have your foot on his neck.

You now go from "must be known" to "must know", to begin a new game for
the next round beginning at 1A.

*From TROM book: Leg 4 commits the over of Rejection and suffers the
motivator of Infliction. *

 *Leg 4 is a losing valence. *

 *Between 8B and 1 A there is a losing valence shift. *

*FROM Slim's version of TROM: *

*Note: The Time Track runs from 8b to 1a. You work from 1a to 8b, around
and around. There is a valence shift on the Track between 8b and a new
substitute effect entered at 1a.Also a valence shift occurs between 4b and
5a.*
