I guess I would ask the same question......This is from Eugene Peterson's the Message. He doesn't actually go verse by verse and you have to read him in context. He is talking to those who apparently were skekptical of the resurrection. I'm not that good at interpreting but I always have thought that Paul was admonishing those who did not believe that the dead in Christ would rise first at the second coming. This is what the verse you asked about says.DAVEH: One of these days I'll stumble onto a copy. Until then Laura, would you be so kind as to quote how the MESSAGE Bible relates 1Cor 15:29. Thanx"Why do you think people offer themselves to be baptized for those already in the grave? If there's no chance of resurrection for a corpse. If God's power stops at the cemetery gates, why do we keep doing things that suggest he's going to clean the poace out someday, pulling everyone up on their feet alive?"
"Why do you think people offer themselves to be baptized for those already in the grave?"
.........as it seems unlikely to me that the early Christians wouldn't have practiced baptism for the dead IF they did not think baptism was an essential element of salvation.
He isn't talking about those who rejected Christ while they were alive. The whole chapter explains it. You can NOT get into heaven if you reject Christ while you are alive. Laura
