Vergil or Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro) was born in 70 BCE in the Andes district near Mantua in Cisalpine Gaul. He died in 19 BCE. He was a Roman poet. Vergil was a rural poet who had a unique contrasting, realistic, and didactic style. His poetic expression gives him a premier position among pastoral poets. His most famous work is the Aeneid (taking much of his life to compose it seems) which is an epic dealing with the mthic founder of Rome. It honored Rome and foretold upcoming prosperity. -----
