Hello, Laura   I've always wondered what the mark was as well. I've heard some people erroneously say it is dark skin. Others a lightning bolt like Harry Potter (or some other insignia).   The term for mark [in Hebrew] is Ot. In the KJV, it's used as such: sign (x60), token (x14), ensign (x2), miracle (x2), mark (x1). It's also as consent (x1). Strong's classifies the word as: a signal (literally or figuratively), as a flag, beacon, monument, omen, prodigy, evidence, etc.: - mark, miracle, (en-) sign, token. This you may or may not find useful depending upon your Midrashic/parabolic training.   Midrash Rabbah - Genesis XXII:12 -- AND THE LORD SAID UNTO HIM: THEREFORE (LAKEN) WHOSOEVER SLAYETH CAIN, etc. (Gen. IV, 15). R.Judah said: The cattle, beasts, and birds assembled to demand justice for Abel.(2) Said the Holy One, blessed be He, to him, ‘I say to thee (lak ani), WHOSOEVER SLAYETH CAIN,’ etc.(3) R. Nehemiah interpreted: Cain's judgment shall not be as the judgment of other murderers. Cain slew, but had none from whom to learn [the enormity of his crime], but henceforth, All who slay shall be slain.(4) AND THE LORD SET A SIGN FOR CAIN. R.Judah said: He caused the orb of the sun to shine on his account. Said R.Nehemiah to him: For that wretch He would cause the orb of the sun to shine! Rather, He caused leprosy to break out on him, as you read, And it shalI come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, etc. (Ex. Rab said: He made him an example to murderers.   (2) R.Judah explains that Cain's fear was due to the animals, seeing that there were no men on earth. (3) Reading ' laken ‘, lak anni, ' To thee I (say).’ He thus assured him that he need have no fear of the animals. (4) He reads ‘laken’ as lo ken, ‘not so,’ this being God's answer to the animals, not to Cain.
