Hello Jason, I fully understand your point. But think about the scenario, where you have bought some kind of software and this software has an API which you would like to use. Would you rename their jar file? Anyway, I think it would be a good idea to take the id as the name alone, if the version is not provided.
Maven is a real good tool and I would be very interested in providing help.
