I had the same problem. This seemed to fix it:
$ sudo apt-get install python-dev libc6-dev gcc
I agree though, ez_setup does make installing easier, and I can understand
not bothering with distro-specific packages, but it would be very nice to
see "ez_remove.py", and maybe even "ez_list.py" to see what it installed.
