I see liquid as a problem to fit images and only those on headers.  If your
header is also a composite one of liquid parts this becomes a minor problem
but as you said, then you have to worry with more parts and it becomes more
problematic. 

One thing that I dislike is that I use a widescreen laptop and having pages
designed for 800x600 or with a fixed with of 800 when I have 1280 pixels is
just seeing a lot of available screen waisted, specially when I have to make a
lot of scrolling to read the full page... :-(
