Chris, I have used both of them for years, but have been using Postgresql as my preffered database for last couple of years. It has held up under heavy load and has been very stable. The 8.1 and the comming 8.2 series have brought allot of performance enhancements as well. My primary issue with MySql is that there client libraries are GPL. Which means that your code must become GPLd if you distribute it at all. I argued with a representative of MySql over this issue, and there perspective was that if the datbase was running on more than one computer, they considered it to be a distributed app. I this case I specifically layed out that this was a wbe app and would only be distributed internally. They told me that I would need to A. GPL my code, or B. Buy a licence from them, so I chose C. Use Postgresql. I think that there stance is a violation of the GPL, but would need to consult the FSF about that. If you decide to use Postgresql, I think that you would be very satisfied with it.
