We started out using gEdit, but have now transitioned to using Aptana Studio (aptana.org). It's built on top of Eclipse/PyDev, but it seems to run perfectly fine for us. Also of note, never use the version of Eclipse found in Ubuntu's repos. They compile it against GCJ instead of proper Sun-Java and that's the most likely reason why it is slow for some, always use the version provided on the developers' site.
