1) *Fast* on-the-fly syntax checking. When it works and is fast
(Komodo), I find it incredibly useful, when it's too slow (Eclipse), it
can ruin your day.

2) *Configurable* code completion. Again, when done right, it can speed
up your typing immensely, but when done in such a way that it constantly
interferes with your typing, so you end up with syntax errors (did
someone say Eclipse again?), you should be able to turn it off easily.

3) Extensible with a scripting language, preferably Python, of course. I
especially like to implement scripts which are able to manipulate the
current selection and reinsert the result (e.g. for sorting sections in
non-standard ways, or reformatting text to ReST syntax, etc.).

4) File templates and code snippet insertion with placeholders, so I
can, say enter "function <name>", hit a shortcut and get a full function
with the name '<name>'.

5) Easy transferring of settings between different installations of the
IDE. I work on many computers and I want my IDE to behave the same
everywhere.

6) A really good and fast "Search&Replace" function with regular
expression support and group substitution. If it works across several
files, even better!

These are just the most important things of the top of my head. I could
go on and on...
