Matthew, Program what is fun for you. I prefer PHP for web work but I'm learning Python for my day job. Python provides a wider range of abilities but PHP is more "fun" for me. If Python GUIs are fun, then do that. The more you enjoy the topic the more reason you will have to learn more and more. I doubt you will exhaust Python's capabilities any time soon.
