>From today's Taylor on Radio-Info: “First All-Christmas station” honors go to Bonneville’s “Movin’” in St. Louis. Can they steal a little thunder from the Gateway City’s heritage Christmas station, CBS Radio’s KEZK (102.5)? Bonneville’s blast-‘em- early tactic is just what the market was expecting, since WMVN (101.1) is already booked to go all-sports at year-end. So the move to drop rhythmic AC more than two months early at least gets Bonneville some attention. So let the record show that WMVN went all-holiday on Friday, October 10, just after midnight, claiming “First All-Christmas station" honors for 2008. The website carries this note: “”Think it’s too early for holiday music? Tune in to 106.5 the Arch and 92.3 WIL.” Now it’s up to KEZK to calibrate its response. The extra-early all- Christmas gambit is typically something you see ahead of a format change or perhaps jock change or image change. The other reason to do it is to try to get the jump on the market’s usual all-Christmas outlet – and that’s been known to trigger a reaction from the heritage station literally in the midst of a scheduled song.
---------------- KEZK's web site just has a clock showing 39 days and counting to their annual switch to all-Christmas music. Considering how unseasonably warm the Midwest has been this weekend, that is the smart move, but if the station's going to be changing formats, anyway... --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Like TV only smarter.
