Last night on Channel 4, comedian Peter Kay mocked the reality comp
genre in a one-shot made-for entitled (deep breath) "Britain’s Got The
Pop Factor And Possibly A New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar
Superstar Strictly On Ice," presented in a two-part "final
performance" and "results show" on the same evening (separated by a
doc on Kay) and with actors playing the contestants and Cat Deeley and
former reality comp judges playing themselves as host and judges,
respectively, along with a cameo from Paul McCartney. The show pulled
C4's biggest non-"Big Brother" numbers of the year, but still got
defeated in the ratings by the real thing--BBC1's "Strictly Come
Dancing (With the Stars)" results show (and the "results show" came in
second to a new episode of ITV's long-running detective show "A Touch
of Frost"):

Response seems to be decidedly mixed, with some critics enjoying the
skewering of reality comp cliches and others finding it not funny
enough (and I suspect that some people flipping across the dial looked
at the show and said "Not another flippin' reality show! Feck this!"
and changed channels).
