It falls along the lines of the old political adage, "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member." No self respecting musician, at least none that I've met... and I've met more than a few... would compromise their ethics enough to stoop so low as to audition for Idol. To subject oneself to being publicly mocked and reprimanded by the judges in the pursuit of fame (really, what the winner becomes is a commodity to be bought, sold, and ultimately discarded) is as morally bankrupt as we're likely to see on television... until they allow televised executions. Cowell and Abdul are, intellectually, only slightly above the level of mental instability wherein people are committed (I don't know enough about Randy to form more than a surface opinion). Maybe Canada's team of judges aren't freakin' psychos, but form tends to follow format. As I've stated before, I helped audition thousands of singers for another televised singing competition. We'd go to clubs and karaoke bars to scout for talent, and, inevitably, regulars of a given establishment would point out a guy or gal and say, "Pick me or don't, but get him/her to audition, because you won't find a better voice." And those audience favorites would never audition, because singing isn't a game to them. It isn't trivial, and it has nothing to do with fame. The modern music scene has been molested (read: violated) by Idol and its ilk. Those who choose to audition for it deserve whatever shame they get, which I hope is a lot. -- Kevin M.
