During President Obama's health care speech to Congress Wednesday night, people watching on WBTV (Channel 3) saw about 30 seconds of commercial, a move the station is calling a mistake. Commercials that air on the television station are usually automated. But during big news events, the mast control operator, who is ultimately in charge of the picture that gets transmitted from the station, is supposed to take manual control to stop advertisements. That didn't happen, said Don Shaw, director of operations and engineering for WBTV, so the commercial was aired. "It's the operator's job to catch that," Shaw said.
