Gaslamp District is a great place to hang out with the wife (close to convention center). Balboa Park is an interesting mix of everything from the famous zoo to musuems to a public park (think of a cleaner, friendlier NYC Central Park). Old Town is OK if you want to do the tourist thing; same with Seaport Village. Ocean Beach is where all the stoners and ex-hippies hang out, which makes for fun people watching. Pacific Beach is where I live, as well as about two dozen bars and a few decent restaurants.
