I agree these days the Gaslamp Quarter is one of the main places to see in San Diego - if you are ever there during the baseball season, Petco Park is nearby as well, and one of the best places to watch a ball game in the country that is not hard on San Francisco Bay. There are lots of middle class (and even middle aged) eating places, and places to listen to pretty decent music. When I was there last year Jim Croce's wife was stilll running a restaurant and jazz place there, for example. If you are from outside of the West, it might be worth noting that there are still enjoyable beach days in October in San Diego, especially in early and mid parts of the month. It can also be foggy and a bit chilly near the shore (mid to high 60s) a lot of days, but if you enjoy a day at the beach I would bring your bathing suits and sun screen and hope for a nice warm day in the 70s. You can find lists of good beaches in the area on the internet, and it pays to check on local and temporary conditions before you go. When I was in high school one of our favorite things to do was go to the beach on warm October weekends. I have always loved the San Diego Zoo, and it is still cool, with or without kids, to hang out in the park and then spend a few hours at the zoo. I loathe Sea World, which is way over-priced and over-packaged. If you are a golfer Torry Pines is a public, municipal course (where Tiger Woods won the US Open so dramatically last year). Most of the time you have to really want it, as I think you have to get there real early to get in line for a tee time. I would be interested in hearing what Kevin's experience has been lately about day trips to Mexico - when I was there last I was strongly advised by the concierge at my hotel to stay away from Tijuana, due to increased crime. This was disappointing to me because growing up as a teenager and young adult in the Los Angeles area I used to go down to TJ a couple of times a year, and had been looking forward to going again, but the hotel was serious enough about it that they scared me away. If your wife will be in San Diego on her own, I would remind her that it is still a Navy town. Not nearly as rough in some parts as it was when I was a kid, but still some parts the unescorted lady might be a little uncomfortable walking around in. Two years ago my son and I took a bus down there, and were stuck outside the bus station for a couple of hours very early in the morning, and we actually saw what I took to be Shore Patrol rounding up rowdies, and other scenes close to the Last Detail. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
