To the uninitiated, "Ashes" is a common euphemism for many contests between the Aussies and Brits, stemming from a long-ago cricket clash taken by Australia, which a newspaper columnist proclaimed as 'the death of English cricket', for which 'the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.'
