In Bill Carter's book Desperate networks, while discussing bringing
Friends back for another season, he noted that 100 episodes gets a
series into daily strip syndication and 200 episodes fills a year's
order. So the revenue to be gained drops after the 200th episode and
as costs go up every year for a hit show it's unusual to see a show go
past 200 episodes. From what I remember reading Two and a Half Men has
done 177 episodes so if CBS continues the series it's only for 1 more
year. If they don't make any more they'll take a financial hit but not
a massive hit. If CBS thinks viewers will tune in for a season without
Charlie they'll recast the role and use the money they save from his
contract to pay off Lorre.
