A few "idol" thoughts on the subject: The market simply cannot absorb all of the singers who do well on the shows. It's too competitive, and they've got to compete with those who didn't go the TV route. Few will be able to make a living in the entertainment industry, although some will find work as back-up singers, etc. For example, a fellow who competed on AI is a member of the Warbler group on Glee.
A successful contestant has to have a lot more going for him or her than being a good singer. There are thousands of good singers in this country; almost none of them can make a living at it. Finally, and probably most importantly, the orginal material they're given has to be great. Philip Phillips, the most recent AI winner, would be destined for oblivion like the others were it not for the fact that he was given a great coronation song, in fact the only decent coronation song in the history of the AI franchise. Kelly Clarkson's career didn't take off until she was given a great song, and the same is true of Carrie Underwood. Great material is even more scarce than those few singers who can actually make a living singing. Adam Lambert just got a mention. His career is pretty much stalling because neither of his two albums produced any really memorable songs. In Idol's early days, when they were the only show on the block, I couldn't avoid finding out who won. Now, though, not only can I not name a single winner from The Voice or X Factor or America's Got Talent, I don't know who the last few Idol winners were. I remember being surprised when a music act on a recent Late Show was identified as an Idol winner, but I can't name him.
