Harmon said in interviews before Season 3 that his vision was for a series
that ran for 4 years matching the 4 years of a degree program. A basis of
the show is that the main characters would not meet each other and form a
close group in any other circumstances and so there would be no point in
trying to keep them together outside of school.

I know I couldn't keep up with the complexity of some of Harmon's
multi-layered plots and I would never take the time to watch episodes
repeatedly to pick up on everything. If some hardcore Community fans did
that regularly, more power to them. But NBC knows they can't bank on that
type of fan to make the show sustainable.
