In Canada, there has always been an à la carte element for channels on the digital tiers. While they are grouped in bundles by subject matter, there has usually been the possibility to pick off one channel from a group for a fee (usually $1-$2/month). In that setup, though, it doesn't take long before it becomes cheaper to just get the bundle. The main cable company in Quebec (Videotron) offers varying levels of à la carte, up to and including total à la carte (other than the must-carries, of course), and the minimum subscription to a channel here is one month, as well.
