Your point re: variety vs. vaudeville is a fair one, but by your definition, Ed 
Sullivan was vaudeville, not variety.  "The Muppet Show" was probably somewhere 
in the middle, like SNL. 

And as far as the show being "performed" for a live audience (as opposed to 
cameras), the 2011 film would suggest otherwise.
